| The former Bethel African
Methodist Episcopal Church, at Sumter and Taylor Streets in midtown
Columbia, is being transformed into the new Bethel Cultural Arts Center,
which will be a museum and performing arts center.
Constructed
in 1922, the church was designed by John Langford, the first registered
black architect in the United States.
The center will have three levels and
seat 600 for performances. The first level will contain a museum and
gift shop; the second level the theater, and the third level the Bell
Tower Sanctuary.
