A visitor's guide to the Friendly Midway, Columbia, SC, an area Where Friendliness Flows

Richland County Public Library

The city's first public library was started in 1896 on Main Street in Columbia.  In 1924 its name changed to the Columbia Public Library, and ten years later, the Richland County Public Library was established, supported by county taxes.  A bill passed in 1941 to build a larger library was delayed until 1952 because of wars, and during the next 35 years, seven branches were added.

In 1989 another expansion project was approved, and the grand opening of this quarter-million square-foot building was held in 1993.  The building was designed by Gene Aubrey, a noted architect of major library buildings around the country.
