The city's first public library was
started in 1896 on Main Street in Columbia. In 1924 its name
changed to the Columbia Public Library, and ten years later, the
Richland County Public Library was established, supported by county
taxes. A bill passed in 1941 to build a larger library was delayed
until 1952 because of wars, and during the next 35 years, seven branches
were added.
