Shandon
"In 1880, the hilly section southeast of Columbia was farmland, producing cotton, grain, hay, and vegetables. In the 1890's, with the advent of the street car, residential lots sold rapidly. Columbia annexed the town of Shandon in 1913. Homes built from 1895 to 1940 characterize Shandon's architectural heritage. Its streets are lined with large oak trees and sidewalks, where residents can be seen greeting one another, walking, jogging, or pushing strollers throughout the day. It is truly a neighborhood in the heart of the city. Shandon was the place to live at the turn of the century, just as it is today!"
