The former Confederate Printing Plant, at the
corner of Gervais and Huger Streets, is an outstanding example of Columbia's
efforts to preserve history. During the Civil War, legal documents and
even currency were printed in this building, which remained unused for decades
and was in danger of being torn down. Thanks to a cooperative public and
private effort, the Publix Supermarket chain rescued this building and
converted it into a modern supermarket. Some of the artifacts discovered
during the building's renaissance are displayed inside the store.
